SELECTION CRITERIA
WHAT IS SELECTION CRITERIA
If you are a nurse applying for either a private or government based clinical role you may be asked to submit selection criteria responses in addition to your resume and cover letter. This is very common for graduate nursing program applications all the way through to senior level nursing jobs.
Selection criteria must be written in accordance with strict guidelines that require detailed, evidence-based examples according to the STAR or SAO Methods. The purpose of selection criteria is to provide employers with concise examples of how you have demonstrated skills that they are seeking for the role.
Selection criteria represent the key qualifications, training, abilities, knowledge, personal attributes, skills and experience a person must have in order to do a job effectively. You must meet the selection criteria in order to be considered for a position.
Normally you will be asked for 6 to 8 selection criteria to respond to in anywhere from 150 to 250 words (on average).
Common selection criteria you may be asked for include:
- research skills
- decision making
- interpersonal/verbal communication
- clinical knowledge
- experience of specific software or processes
- leadership and team work
- negotiation
- time management
- problem-solving / conflict resolution

WHAT IS A SUITABILITY STATEMENT
Whether you are a recent graduate or an experienced nursing or healthcare professional, crafting an adequate suitability statement is essential. The aims of a suitability statement is to enhance your profile and emphasize your skills, and highlight your professional capabilities. A suitability statement, or personal statement, is also used to depict the reasons you believe yourself to be a suitable candidate for a job role. It is similar to a cover letter but should specifically outline your skills, experience and the reasons why an employer should hire you and why you match that particular organisation and their culture.
At Exceptional Tuition and Resumes we can draft a suitability statement for you.
